This project will implement the County’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line, the FLASH, which will operate along US 29. Starting in 2020, the 14-mile, 11-station BRT will run between Burtonsville and downtown Silver Spring. MCDOT is building 18 new BRT station platforms with near-level boarding, upgraded station amenities, and off-board fare payment, and constructing enhanced pedestrian walkways, bike facilities and bikeshare stations.
The new BRT service will use the existing bus-on-shoulder lanes on US 29 in the northern section of the corridor and operate in mixed traffic in the southern section of US 29 and along Lockwood Drive, Stewart Lane, Briggs Chaney Road, and Castle Boulevard.
